While Beyonce has her cult following patiently waiting for her next project. Two weeks ago, Beyonce released her new merchandise line “Formation” on Beyonce.com and casted to be the face of the campaign is inspirational New York-beauty Jillian Mercado. Mercado is a successful model with muscular dystrophy, a group of genetic diseases that cause progressive weakness and loss of muscle mass.
Never content with the status quo, Beyoncé, with Mercado, is making a statement about the inclusion of models with disabilities. While the IMG Models discovered model is shot in her wheelchair the entire campaign, Mercado has expressed the fact on social media that while reporters have labelled her as, “Wheelchair Bound”, she on the contrary is not bound to it. Mercado’s excitement didn’t get in the way of her using the moment as a platform to better educate the public. Vogue has noted the fashion community is also celebrating Mercado recent enlistment. Saying that the casting serves as a reminder that inclusion is not limited to models of diverse racial background, ethnicities, and body types—but also those with disabilities.
In an Instagram post revealing the news, Mercado shared her excitement with her at her latest casting.
OK LADIES now let's get in FORMATION! So BEYond excited to finally announce that I'm on the official @beyonce website!!! A special shout out to Queen Bee herself and the amazing team behind it 👑 Photography by the most wonderful @danielavesco, Makeup @jamiebeaute, & Hair @jenniferjocelyn 🐝 #slay #formation #jillianmercado
Mercado later followed up with a second post showing the news frenzy surrounding her new campaign, describing it as “surreal”.
The Formation campaign was shot by Daniela Vesco, with make-up by Jamie Dorman. The two other models featured alongside Mercado are Sharon Gallardo and Vision LA/New York Models’ Alayah Lee. Shot on location in New York City. Checkout the complete “Formation” spread starring Mercado below.
Jillian Mercado is very quite familiar with being the face of big name brands now heading into her third-year of her career. Signing with IMG Models back in 2014, the 27-year-old burst onto the scene as the face of Diesel ’14 Spring/Summer line. After catching mass appeal from that, Mercado went on to be the face for Nordstrom that same year.
Mercado is in the current-issue of Time Out New York. Mercado is one of the few models with disabilities, but her presence on Beyoncé’s campaign could soon change that.
The Formation line is on sale now at Beyonce.com.
